Railcard-gate
One day in 2015, Virgin Trains (very, very quietly) whispered that they were withdrawing 16-25 railcard perks on peak-time travel. In just two weeks. Young people just starting out in their careers were affected. At incredibly short notice, everyone who relied on their railcards for just-about-doable travel would have to fork out £10,000 for a season ticket, move away from friends and family, or lose their jobs. So we wrote letters like crazy, and ran a Twitter campaign. Unfortunately, Virgin Trains stuck with the silent treatment. The changes went through anyway. But we got lots of coverage online, in national papers, and on local news programmes. And we got huge support from the general public, and thousands of petition signatures.
